Commercial Battery Storage Systems in Australia: Range, Sizes and Prices

Commercial battery storage systems in Australia range from around 60 kWh for a small business up to megawatt-scale industrial installations, and they come two ways: pre-assembled all-in-one systems that arrive ready to install, or custom-configured solutions designed around your site. At BESS Australia, small commercial systems start from around $20,500 for a 60 kWh GoodWe C&I battery, with larger pre-packaged systems such as a 125 kW / 261 kWh unit listed at around $80,200, and megawatt-scale solutions quoted on enquiry. This guide covers what's available, how to pick the right scale, the difference between pre-assembled and custom systems, and what each option costs.

A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity so a business can use it when power is most expensive or when the grid goes down. BESS Australia is an accredited supplier and installer of commercial battery energy storage systems — supplying equipment Australia-wide, and providing supply-and-installation across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

What size commercial battery does your business need?

Commercial battery storage falls into three broad tiers, and the right one depends on your peak demand and the loads you want to cover — not simply your floor space.

Tier

Typical capacity

Suits

Small commercial

~60–100 kWh

Small businesses, workshops, clinics, hospitality, small retail

Mid-scale C&I

~100–300 kWh

Manufacturing, cold storage, larger retail, multi-tenancy sites

Large / industrial

300 kWh to megawatt-scale

Industrial plant, processing, large commercial campuses

The honest version: sizing comes from your interval data — the half-hourly record of how much power you draw and when. What matters is how high your demand peaks are, how long they last, and what you want running in an outage. Oversizing ties up capital; undersizing misses the peaks that cost you most. We model this from your bills before recommending a system.

Pre-assembled or custom: two ways to buy commercial storage

Pre-assembled (all-in-one) commercial battery systems arrive as a factory-built, pre-integrated unit — battery, inverter and management in one enclosure — while custom-configured systems are designed and assembled around your specific site, loads and expansion plans.

Pre-assembled all-in-one systems suit most small and mid-scale businesses:

  • Faster, simpler installation — fewer components to integrate on site

  • Factory-tested as a unit, so commissioning is more predictable

  • A known price and specification up front

  • Examples in our range include the GoodWe ESA 125kW/261kWh, the SAJ CHS2 Series C&I All-in-One ESS (100 kWh, 6 MPPT / 12 strings), and the pre-packaged Fox ESS H3 Pro commercial packages

Custom-configured systems suit larger or more complex sites:

  • Sized precisely to unusual load profiles or staged expansion

  • Able to integrate with existing generation, switchboards or control systems

  • Examples include the Fox ESS POWER BEAST custom large-scale C&I solution and the Sigenergy SigenStack scalable commercial system

Which to choose? If your requirement is reasonably standard and you want a predictable cost and timeline, a pre-assembled system is usually the better value. If your site has an unusual demand shape, constrained space, or a staged growth plan, custom design earns its keep. We quote both so you can compare.

* Current listed equipment prices in AUD, as listed at time of writing and subject to change — confirm the current price and GST treatment on the product page. Prices are for equipment; installation, electrical work, network approvals and commissioning are quoted separately. Larger and custom systems are priced on enquiry.

Reading these prices properly matters. An equipment price is not an installed price: a commercial battery install also involves electrical work, switchboard and metering, network approval, commissioning and compliance. When you compare suppliers, compare on the same basis — equipment against equipment, or installed against installed.

Don't overlook the balance-of-system

A commercial battery rarely works alone — backup switching and energy management hardware are what turn it into a system that actually controls your demand. Commonly specified alongside the battery:

  • Backup boxes — such as the GoodWe STS200-80-10 STS Box (~$1,483) or the GW125K-STS-G10 backup box (~$1,701), which handle the switchover that keeps critical circuits running during an outage

  • Smart energy controllers — such as the GoodWe SEC3000C Smart Energy Controller (~$1,929), which coordinates generation, storage and site load so the system targets your peak demand rather than just storing energy

These are modest line items relative to the battery, but they determine whether the system delivers demand-charge reduction and backup properly. We specify them as part of the design rather than leaving them as afterthoughts.

Pairing commercial storage with solar

Commercial solar battery storage works best as a pair: solar generates cheap daytime energy, and the battery shifts it into your expensive peak periods instead of exporting it for a low feed-in rate. For most C&I sites, a battery without solar is a demand-management tool; a battery with solar is also an energy-cost tool.

There's a timely reason to consider both together. From 1 October 2026, the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) raised the small-scale threshold for solar from 100 kW to 1 MW, meaning many commercial solar systems up to 1 MW can now access upfront small-scale technology certificates rather than the more complex large-scale route — materially improving commercial solar economics. Eligibility and certificate values depend on the system and current rules; see the Clean Energy Regulator for the authoritative detail.

If you're specifying both, our commercial solar panel range covers the generation side of the project.

Incentives for business battery storage

Businesses can access the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which reduces the installed cost of eligible battery systems, and the discount reduces over time through to 2030 — so the value is generally greater the sooner you install. Eligibility, the capacity supported and the amount depend on the product, the installation and current program rules. See the official Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

In New South Wales there's a second layer: from 1 September 2026, the state's Peak Demand Reduction Scheme added commercial battery activities — BESS4 for small and medium businesses (over 20 kWh to 200 kWh usable, with new solar required) and BESS5 for commercial and industrial sites (over 200 kWh, with the incentive applying to the first 10,000 kWh). These are certificate-based, so there's no fixed dollar value — it depends on eligible capacity, inverter output, whether new solar is included, and certificate prices.

We factor the incentives you qualify for into your quote, so you see a net cost rather than a headline figure.

The brands in our commercial range

  • SAJ — the CHS2 Series C&I All-in-One ESS, a 100 kWh pre-integrated system with 6 MPPT / 12 strings.

  • Sigenergy — the SigenStack scalable commercial energy storage solution.

  • PowerLink — additional commercial options in the range.

Equipment supply or full supply-and-install?

Businesses buy commercial storage two ways, and both are available: equipment-only supply for your own electrical contractor or EPC, or complete supply-and-installation.

  • Supply-and-install suits businesses wanting one accountable partner for design, supply, installation, network approval and commissioning. We provide this across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

  • Equipment-only supply suits electricians, installers and EPC contractors sourcing tier-1 commercial batteries and inverters, with Australia-wide delivery and trade pricing. If you're outside our installation footprint — Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin or regional Australia — we can still supply the equipment to your site for your own installer.

Trade and equipment buyers can browse and enquire directly through the commercial products range, or call 1300 859 066 / email sales@bessaustralia.com.au for trade pricing and stock.

Why BESS Australia for commercial storage

BESS Australia supplies and installs commercial and industrial battery energy storage across six tier-1 brands under one roof, backed by a Lowest Price Guarantee — with published prices on much of the range, which is rare in commercial storage. We pre-empt the concerns that matter to a business buyer:

  • Published equipment pricing — you can see what much of the range costs rather than waiting on a quote to get a ballpark.

  • Scope clarity — equipment-only or full supply-and-install, itemised, so you can compare like for like.

  • Right-sizing from data — we model your interval data and demand profile, not a template.

  • Incentive handling — federal battery support and, in NSW, the new PDRS commercial activities, factored into your net cost.

  • Balance-of-system specified properly — backup switching and energy management designed in, not bolted on.

  • Accreditation — CEC-approved products, NETCC Approved Seller, and installation by accredited installers with a workmanship warranty.

  • Finance — available as an option (an option, not financial advice; confirm terms).

3. FAQ

How much does a commercial battery storage system cost in Australia? Equipment prices in our commercial range start from around $20,500 for a 60 kWh system, with mid-scale systems roughly 33,000–60,000 and a 125 kW / 261 kWh pre-packaged system around $80,200. Larger and custom systems are priced on enquiry. Installation, network approval and commissioning are quoted separately.

What size battery does a commercial site need? It comes from your interval data — how high your demand peaks are, how long they last, and what you need running in an outage. Broadly, small businesses suit around 60–100 kWh, mid-scale commercial and industrial sites 100–300 kWh, and large industrial sites 300 kWh to megawatt scale. A load analysis gives the precise size.

What is a pre-assembled commercial battery system? A pre-assembled or all-in-one commercial battery arrives as a factory-built unit with the battery, inverter and management integrated in one enclosure. It installs faster, is factory-tested as a system, and has a known price and specification. Custom-configured systems are instead designed around unusual load profiles, constrained sites or staged expansion.

Can commercial battery storage be combined with solar? Yes, and they work best together — solar generates cheap daytime energy and the battery shifts it into expensive peak periods instead of exporting it cheaply. From 1 October 2026 the SRES threshold for small-scale solar rose from 100 kW to 1 MW, improving the economics for commercial solar paired with storage.

Do you supply commercial batteries outside your installation areas? Yes. We supply commercial battery equipment Australia-wide, including to Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin and regional areas, for installation by your own electrical contractor or EPC. Full supply-and-installation is available across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. Trade pricing is available on enquiry.
